Equity

Definition

Equity is ownership of a company in the form of shares that represent a claim on the corporation’s earnings and assets. Common stockholders have the right to vote on directors and other key matters. While preferred stockholders lack voting rights, they have priority in dividend payments. A corporation can authorize additional classes of stock, each with its own set of contractual rights.
