Maturity

Definition

Maturity is the date when, or the remaining time until, an issuer is obligated to deliver the final coupon and principal payments owed to a bondholder. Bonds with a remaining term to maturity of one to five years are generally considered short-term; those maturing between six and 12 years out are considered intermediate-term; and those with maturities beyond 12 years are considered long-term. Bonds maturing in less than one year are categorized as cash equivalents.
